The teenager has featured in seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said the player after his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
