What's Inside the Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a discovery that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the encounter was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would later pass on to the test subjects under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day as a different person. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a sinister presence, much like how Will was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
