UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes depict the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic involves managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
