President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have left a Washington summit empty-handed after failing to obtain the long-desired Tomahawk cruise missiles from US President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian president commented following the cordial bilateral that both leaders had talked about long-range missiles, but decided not to make statements on that matter "because the US administration does not want an intensification."

Trump's Stance on Weapons Transfer

While Trump left open the possibility of providing the missiles to the Ukrainian forces, his attitude during the White House meeting was non-committal.

"Hopefully Ukraine won't require them, ideally we can get the war over without thinking about these weapons," Trump stated, adding that America required the missile systems for its own security.

Trump acknowledged that sending the missiles would be "a significant escalation, but we'll be talking about it."

The Trump-Zelensky meeting came just a day after Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and arranged to meet him in Budapest soon.

Following the discussions, Trump used his social media platform to call for Ukraine and Russia to "stop where they are" and end the war.

President Zelensky proposed that Ukraine could offer drones in return for the Tomahawks, a suggestion that elicited positive reactions from Trump.

The Ukrainian president also praised Trump on his efforts in securing a peace deal in the region, suggesting that the American president could capitalize on that success to help end the conflict in Ukraine.

When asked about whether the possibility of Ukraine obtaining the advanced missiles had influenced Putin to agree to meet the US leader, Zelensky responded, "It's unclear," adding that the prospect had caused Russia to be "afraid because it is a powerful military asset."

When questioned if he was leaving the US capital more optimistic that Ukraine would receive the Tomahawks, he stated, "My approach is realistic."

Zelensky maintains that using these missiles to strike at Russian oil and energy facilities would significantly damage Putin's war economy.
