The United States Proposes a 15-Year Period of Protection Commitments, Affirms President Zelenskyy.

Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has disclosed that Washington has outlined a draft peace framework encompassing defense assurances for the country spanning a period of 15 years.

The Framework's Specifics

President Zelenskyy noted that during a high-stakes meeting with American leader Donald Trump, he had requested long-term defense assurances for a duration of 50 years. However, the proposed framework envisions a more limited commitment of fifteen years from the United States.

It is not clear what form these commitments would take, but the president has been pushing for "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, referring to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's founding principle that aggression towards any member should be seen as an assault against the entire alliance.

Negotiation Developments

According to Zelenskyy, American defense commitments for Ukraine under the modified 20-point proposal have been completely settled, though the American leader expressed more caution, suggesting the progress was more like 95%.

The two presidents stated that headway was accomplished during the Florida talks. Trump, however, cautioned that there were "one or two tough" remaining points, such as those related to land.

The Path to a Meeting with Russia

Separately, Zelenskyy informed the press that a direct engagement with Moscow would be possible after the Washington and its European partners agreed on a settlement proposal from Ukraine to end the war.

This statement comes after Donald Trump stated publicly that he thought a trilateral meeting between Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington could happen when conditions are suitable.

Background of Engagements

Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have been without a summit since the end of 2019. The most recent talks, mediated by the leaders of France and Germany, sought to restart efforts to end the persistent war.

Subsequently, in May 2025, the Kremlin leader refused to travel to Istanbul for discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, turning down a direct offer to talk about ending the war in Turkey.

Unresolved Land Disputes

A key unresolved issue continues to be the status of the Donbas territory. President Trump stated that a plan to turn the region, which is mostly under Russian control, into a zone free of military forces remains "unresolved".

He added that it will become clear in a matter of weeks if the war can end.

The involved parties have emphasized that the extended negotiations would continue as they aim to achieve a final resolution to the multi-year hostilities.
