The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
