Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Team

The English team has chosen a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.

The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.

Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted five past matches.

In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin.

Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.

On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable decision.

Alternative Choices Considered

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.

However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.

In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”

“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
