Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Attack

The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
