Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
