Correctional Facilities Cannot Be Resolved Immediately, Government Official Says, while Law Enforcement Search For Two Men Incorrectly Released
Shadow justice secretary the shadow minister has described the situation as a "complete and utter shambles," commenting this morning.
Speaking during a broadcast interview, he pointed to comments made by the justice minister after a previous prisoner release, stating that Lammy would implement more robust verifications.
"It took six days for the prison service supposedly to realize this has happened" and inform the authorities, Jenrick explains, "who are now a week late in the search to find him."
The opposition figure criticises the minister's handling during yesterday's parliamentary questions and alleges him of a "complete failure in responsibility."
Speaking about incorrect inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson underlines that "every single accidental discharge [...] is unacceptable."
He acknowledges there were similar incidents under the former administration, but claims the number "has risen significantly" under the current government.
Calling for additional correctional facilities to be built, he continues: "What the British people want to see now are adequate safeguards implemented."
"That is a particular bureaucratic error by the justice department supervised by the minister," Jenrick says.
