California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

Following 25 long years, not a single part of California is enduring dryness. This significant achievement comes on the heels of grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified blaze threats and strained its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Shows An Absence of Drought

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker showed that California in its entirety is clear of dry or drought conditions. This shift resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that topped up key lakes like Oroville and Shasta well above their typical levels.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status included powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, causing widespread flooding, electrical failures, and tragic losses. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were considered unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

However, authorities caution that being out of drought is not the same as being out of the woods. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation show it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This mountain snow, which provides approximately 30% of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for long-term water security. State experts stress that it is not yet time to make predictions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” explained a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor is entirely green, attention turns to sustaining this positive water situation during the rest of the year.
