American Officials Report Apprehension in Thwarted New Year's Eve Explosive Scheme Outside Los Angeles
Federal agents stated on Monday that they had successfully thwarted a comprehensive scheme to explode IEDs at multiple locations belonging to two corporate businesses on New Year's Eve in the southern part of the state. The operation resulted from the arrest of people part of an militant faction promoting anti-corporate and anti-government beliefs.
Those Arrested Detained During Desert Rehearsal
Four individuals were taken into custody last Friday in the desert region found east of Los Angeles at the time they were allegedly practicing their intended strike. Officials presented overhead reconnaissance video to reporters, which showed the suspects moving a large obscure device to a table. Officials noted that the arrests were made before the group could assemble a fully functional bomb.
Names of the Accused Disclosed
Based on the submitted court documents, the four people named are Carroll, aged 30; Page, 32; Gaffield, 24; and Lai, 41. Each of them are reportedly from the Los Angeles region.
Suspected Motive and Connections
While prosecutors did not clearly describe a reason, they said the group are members of a splinter group dubbed the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This organization allegedly calls for "laborers to rebel and resist against corporate power," according to the legal filing.
They face include conspiracy and owning a bomb. Officials stated that more charges are expected in the next few weeks.
Particulars of the Alleged "The Midnight Sun Plan"
Officials said that one of the suspects had devised a detailed plan last month to attack multiple corporate facilities across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The targets were likened to "Amazon-type" logistical centers.
"The plan was detailed," the attorney remarked. "It contained a precise guide to construct explosive devices … and listed several sites across the county of Orange and Los Angeles."
As per the case and the complaint, the scheme involved planting backpacks filled with sophisticated IEDs that were scheduled to be detonated at the same time at midnight on New Year's Eve at 5 places. New Year's Eve was identified as an opportune time since the plan noted "fireworks will be going off at this time so blast noises will be less likely to be detected."
The eight-page manually written blueprint, titled "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," suggested that more locations could be incorporated. The locations were identified as premises and operations run by two different corporations connected with operations related to commerce.
Future Schemes and Evidence Found
The investigation also stated that two people in the collective had discussed future attacks targeting ICE agents agents and cars with IEDs in 2026. One accused according to the complaint said that such attacks "would kill some and intimidate the rest of them."
Such discussions were reportedly talked over both at an physical meeting in Los Angeles and through an private communication application.
Images included in the court documents reveal a isolated site with what officials identified as IED-construction materials laid out on plastic folding tables.
The complaint notes that the group "each brought explosive materials to the campsite, among them various sizes of tubes, suspected a chemical compound, charcoal briquettes, fuel powder, powdered sulfur, and material to be used as fuses, and more."
Instructions also contained directions on how to build the bombs and how to prevent leaving forensic clues that could be traced back to the individuals. The accused had in the recent past purchased precursor chemicals and other materials, with purchases from major websites.
Operation and Follow-up
The FBI took action last week while the suspects were running through the strike in the remote area near a California town. "They possessed all the components they were necessary to make an functional IED at that location," the prosecutor stated.
As part of served search warrants, officials reportedly discovered flyers for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one individual's home that called for "America Must Fall", and "Eliminate ICE". At another individual's residence, police found a duplicate of the elaborate attack blueprint.
The suspects were arrested peacefully. They were due to appear in court in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
