Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
